Designers' Corner

MARK RAISSEN Lighting Design Consultant

Every so often you are offered the opportunity to work on a project that you gladly would do for free. So when I was called in by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to offer them some advice on improving the energy efficiency of the lighting of Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home (and masterpiece) Taliesin West, I jumped at the chance. If you have never visited Taliesin West, I urge you to do so. It is a masterpiece of Wright's vision of organic architecture that includes an incredible use of natural light through a tent-like roof of redwood and canvas.

My vision was to integrate cutting-edge LED lights into the existing fixtures so as not to change the master's original vision – something which those running the foundation understandably adhere to zealously!  But given Frank Lloyd Wright's naturalistic approach to design, I felt strongly that the eco-friendliness of LED lighting better captured the essence of Taliesin West than a traditional incandescent ever could.  Using a variety of different OPTILED LEDs, I was able to minimize their energy usage without qualitatively changing the appearance of a room or replacing any existing light fixture. My strategy for the experiment was simple: replace the incandescents in their existing fixtures (like the one you see pictured – an amber colored OPTILED Festival Festoon LED) with LEDs in some rooms but not others. I then walked the group through and asked for their reaction.  Happily, the group was basically not able to figure out which rooms I had changed!  Less energy, less maintenance, same look and feel. I had opened some eyes.

Still, convincing people that changing ANYTHING in a living landmark like Taliesin West is indeed quite difficult. Keeping it exactly the way it was when FLW, himself, was roaming the grounds is a noble cause. And while the Foundation at the moment is hesitant to make the change from incandescent to LED, time will tell whether Arizona makes the decision for them by following the footsteps of its neighbor to the West by banning incandescents altogether. On February 23rd (the day after the legislation was passed) I was called to a meeting with the office of California Councilman Levine to discuss the implications of their having passed the legislation banning incandescents. Given what I heard in that meeting, I would be surprised if California is the last to put this ban into place!
